Militias block roads in fresh violence
Article Abstract:
Paramilitary groups have blocked roads and attacked travelers in East Timor following a referendum on whether East Timor should become independent. There are fears that two United Nations (UN) employees have been killed, after the death of another UN employee. The turnout for the referendum was 98.2%. A United Nations spokesman, David Wimhurst, has called for reconciliation and an end to intimidation. A group opposing independence argues that the vote was 'garbage' and claims that the United Nations is biased. The Indonesian security forces appear to ignore militia activity.

East Timor defies fear to vote for freedom
Article Abstract:
East Timor has carried out a referendum on whether it should become independent, and there is an atmosphere of hope as well as fear. There have been attempts to intimidate voters, but participation has been strong and people walked long distances to be able to vote, in many cases. The turnout was over 90%, according to the United Nations (UN), but UN officials are concerned that levels of violence could escalate. There is still fear that voters could be betrayed, but the people of East Timor have made a clear choice.
