No Sartre, no Lessing, no Mailer: Frodo the hobbit beats them all
Article Abstract:
A poll of more than 25,000 people undertaken by book retailer Waterstone's and Channel 4's 'Book Choice' has produced some unexpected insights into the books which are regarded as the best of the 20th century. The list of the top 100 titles did not include some significant works by Doris Lessing and Norman Mailer, and contained no books at all by Jean-Paul Sartre. The book regarded as the greatest of the 20th century was JRR Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings,' followed by George Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four.'

Advertisers 'prey' on female dread of random attack
Article Abstract:
The Independent Television Commission received 33 complaints that a Cellnet advertisement exploited women's fear of attack. Cellnet sold over 50,000 telephones during the campaign. Publicity about murders of women has increased sales of personal alarms. Gadgets include a smell-releasing oil and DYEWitness, a blinding foam which stains an attacker's face. The main suspect in 43% of murders is the spouse. Statistics show random attack is actually rare.

Job-seekers put to test in chambers challenge
Article Abstract:
Bethnal Green Barristers Chambers, London, England, a legal-aid practice committed to equal opportunities, had to be selective as 60 law graduates applied for its two pupillages. By 1994, only second- or first-class graduates will obtain a place. In 1992, about 2/3 applicants gained a pupillage. The Bethnal Green barristers only consider left-wing candidates. They use application forms to avoid bias and try to practice positive discrimination.
