No backbenchers in the bedroom
Article Abstract:
The Family Homes and Domestic Violence Bill, which is now reaching the final stages of parliamentary approval, would provide a uniform code of remedies for victims of violence in the home, whether they are married to their partner or not. This is a move which should be welcomed, but has recently attracted opposition from some rebel Conservative MPs, who accuse Lord Mackay, the author of the Bill, of trying to undermine family values. They should not be allowed to hamper the passage of this Bill or of moves to simplify divorce.

Article Abstract:
The UK government's efforts to support and promote marriage are discussed. Attention is also given to the legal issues surrounding pre-nuptial agreements and divorce. It is argued that pre-nuptial agreements can never fully anticipate situations that may arise later in a marriage.
