No one can afford to ignore the 'speculators' - or have them shot
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable debate about the role of currency speculators as the exchange rates between leading currencies have been much more volatile in 1997 than in 1996. Investment bankers are very keen to see volatility, as it presents them with new profit opportunities. In contrast, central bankers and finance ministers are opposed to volatility, believing that exchanges rates should reflect economic fundamentals. It is clear that even countries with apparently strong economies, such as the US, cannot afford to ignore the currency markets.

The dark side of globalisation where the black economy thrives
Article Abstract:
International organized crime will be a key subject at the forthcoming 1998 G8 summit. Economic globalization has fuelled international organized crime, and new types of crime are emerging, such as trafficking nuclear materials and human organs. Organized crime has now reached a scale where it is endangering the ability of governments to operate their monetary and banking policies and to ensure financial market stability. Organized crime is also having a very negative impact on democratic and market institutions.
