Article Abstract:
The Highlands of Scotland have been a popular film location for many years. They have featured in film including 'The 39 Steps,' 'Ring of Bright Water' and 'I Know Where I'm Going.' Most frequently, the area is portrayed as somewhere with special qualities to which characters can retreat to resolve their difficulties. Its inhabitants are portrayed as either sly eccentrics or physically strong but intellectually weak. Showing Scotland in films has had a very beneficial impact on the tourist industry there.

Just like a man
Article Abstract:
Film-maker Howard Hawks only had respected for people who did their job well without making a fuss, according to Kevin Macdonald, who has produced a new documentary about Hawks. It proved difficult to bring together every aspect of Hawks' life and work in a 58-minute documentary, and Macdonald still feels that there are other elements which should have been included. In particular, the documentary does not give enough attention to Hawks' ability to make film stars give outstanding performances.

Proust: time waster?
Article Abstract:
Motion picture directors seeking to film 'A la recherche des temps perdu' by Marcel Proust have faced a number of problems. The work comprises 15 volumes and cannot easily be compressed into a movie. Raul Ruiz is one such director, and the number of characters in the movie can be confusing. Joseph Losey sought to adapt the work, but his project never came to fruition. Harold Pinter produced a screenplay adapted the work, and Pinter's version has been admired by critics.
