Northern Ireland changes colour
Article Abstract:
Nationalism is beginning to play an increasingly significant role in Northern Irish politics. The nationalist movement is benefiting from the charisma of its leaders, Gerry Adams and John Hume, and is proving much more effective at influencing voters than the Unionist movement. There has been a particular rise in the popularity of Sinn Fein, and the results of recent local elections show worrying trends for Unionists. Nationalism is increasingly influencing the political agenda as the proportion of Catholics in the Northern Irish population rises.

The colour Orange
Article Abstract:
Northern Ireland's Orange Order has been a key factor behind serious civil disturbance, even though it theoretically subscribes to unity and obedience to the law. It has remained determined to hold its traditional marches through hostile Catholic areas, and these have led to violent conflict. The Order, founded at the end of the 18th century after a gang of Protestants had beaten a gang of Catholics in a clash fuelled by land shortages and sectarianism, has become one of the most powerful pressure groups in Northern Ireland.

Ripples still spreading from Bloody Sunday
Article Abstract:
The repercussions of the Bloody Sunday massacre in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, are still being felt by ordinary families in the area and beyond. The event prompted three young men from a small Catholic estate in north Belfast, Northern Ireland, to join the IRA. They were killed in an explosion shortly after joining the IRA, but their families are still being targeted by loyalists. Indeed, each of the three families has lost another member in loyalist attacks.
