Northern Ireland talks have reached the endgame, but stalemate is all too likely
Article Abstract:
There is a negative atmosphere surrounding the peace process in Northern Ireland. If a successful conclusion is reached, it will only be because of the self-interested approach of all parties, rather than because of a genuine desire for peace. There is a great deal of mistrust and fear among ordinary people in Northern Ireland, even though the vast majority want peace. The nationalist attitude towards the new assembly in Belfast, Northern Ireland, could prove a particular stumbling block as the talks enter their final phase.

Blair urges Unionists to back deal
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has called on the Ulster Unionist Party to accept the peace deal for Northern Ireland. He has warned that he will not really be able to do any more if an agreement is not reached shortly. However, Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble is still seeking concessions. He hopes to obtain as many guarantees as possible from the Irish government and the Social Democratic and Labour Party.
