Now's the time to pick up a PEP
Article Abstract:
The UK personal equity plan (PEP) market is still strong, according to Perpetual's marketing director, Roger Cornick, who projects that sales will increase at the end of 1998. Unit trust PEP investments reached a record GB 1.7bn in April 1998 and net sales of nearly GB 700mn for May 1998 represented a 15% increase on the year earlier. The fact that Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) will succeed PEPs after the April 1999 abolition of new PEPs is cited as the main reason for the current strength of the PEP sector. Existing PEPs are to be ring fenced as of April 1999 and the feeling is that now is the best time to be opting for a PEP. Anthony Yadgaroff of Allen Direct, the PEP discount broker, believes that with tax allowances being cut, investing in PEPs as a long-term savings strategy is a wise idea.

Exciting times for electrical engineers
Article Abstract:
UK companies that have traditionally employed electrical engineers could face a shortage of recruits as more potential electrical engineering students are attracted into the related areas of microelectronics and computing. Furthermore, some electrical engineering degree courses have been dropped or have changed their emphasis to electronics. There are also concerns about the calibre of students on the remaining pure electrical engineering courses.
