ScotAm tries to kick habit
Article Abstract:
Mutual life company Scottish Amicable , which has seen mixed performance over recent years, has received a takeover bid from Abbey National, a leading UK financial services company. Scottish Amicable, which has total funds under management of more than 14 billion pounds sterling, had planned to address its problems through a two-stage demutualisation and flotation process covering three-five years. It is likely to find it hard to explain to policyholders why it is unwilling to accept the bid from Abbey National.

Article Abstract:
It is widely assumed that tracker funds, which invest in a real or simulated basket of equities, are badly affected if financial markets go into decline. However, this is not necessarily the case. Recent research indicates that most actively-managed funds perform no better than tracker funds if markets decline dramatically. Furthermore, most tracker funds offer lower investment charges and lower annual management fees. Most investors should consider having at least an initial holding in a tracker fund.

Article Abstract:
Many women in the UK are likely to find that their standard of living drops dramatically when they retire. Sex discrimination has officially been outlawed, but women in retirement are generally still worse off than retired men. This can be the result of enforced career breaks or because women live longer than men, and therefore receive a smaller income from a personal pension. It is vital that women plan carefully for retirement, beginning by obtaining a forecast of their state pension entitlement.
