In 1998, cosmetics sales amounted to 312.4mn units, valued at [pounds sterling]1,536mn, a rise of 17% in value terms but only 2% in volume terms, indicating a strong consumer-preference for premium brands. The cosmetic market, which comprises three main sectors: women's fragrances, color cosmetics, and skincare products, is surveyed, with focus on the leading suppliers and brands.
