Oftel attacks BT on phone choice
Article Abstract:
The ruling that British Telecom (BT) must open up of the market for directory enquiry services suggests that the regulator, Oftel, is unhappy with BT's hold on the residential market and, if necessary, will force the telecoms operator to open up to rival users. In October Oftel is due to publish a consultation paper which will propose that BT unbundle its local loop network to other operators. This would permit them to gain access to the network from the local exchange to customers' houses, thereby allowing them to provide high speed Internet access and home shopping services. BT is widely regarded has having successfully protected its local loops, as cable operators have stopped building networks, and one company Ionica, is close to bankruptcy.

Eastern chief mulls bid for Powergen station
Article Abstract:
In order to be able to make a bid to acquire East Midlands Electricity the UK utility PowerGen is being forced to sell off generating capacity of 2000 megawatts by the industry regulator. There is now a strong probability that this will involve the sale of the Ferrybridge power station and that a bid for the plant could be made by a potential new venture that would be headed by the finance director at Energy Group and the chairman at Eastern. The two men concerned are Eric Anstee and John Devaney respectively. A final decision on the creation of the venture has not yet been made and 10 other firms have shown interest in the PowerGen plant.
