Oh, he's so modern ...
Article Abstract:
The Tate Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition of the work of English landscape watercolourist Francis Towne, who lived from 1739 to 1816. His works are characterized by flat colours, tight structures and strong outlines, and in this way seem to anticipate later developments in art, including post-Impressionism and abstraction. The exhibition focuses on his work over a 10-year period, when he painted in the Lake District, the Alps, Wales and Italy, and includes a number of impressive paintings.

Designs for living
Article Abstract:
The Tate Gallery in London, England, is currently holding an exhibition entitled 'Mondrian: Nature to Abstraction.' This focuses on Mondrian's early work, as the Tate Gallery was able to receive a considerable number of these works on loan from the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, Netherlands. The visitor is able to gain an insight into the artist's beginnings as a Dutch landscape painter and to see how he was influenced by Divisionism, Symbolism, Cubism and Fauvism. Little emphasis is placed on his later abstract works.

Giving Pre-Raphaelites a bad name
Article Abstract:
The Tate Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'The Age of Rossetti, Burne-Jones and Watts: Symbolism in Britain 1860-1910.' This exhibition succeeds in its aim of showing Symbolism as a direct inspiration for some types of Modernist art. It also benefits from the inclusion of pictures by European contemporaries. However, it does not really seem to do much to enhance the reputation of Symbolist work itself, as all the works simply appear rather strange.
