When gold fades into grey
Article Abstract:
Michael Heseltine will be 60 in April 1993 and the man who unseated Margaret Thatcher is a shadow of his former self and resigned to the fact that his life-long ambition of being prime minister will not be realised. At the time of the pits crisis in the autumn of 1992 he looked tired and his performance was less than polished. He was thinking more about what the miners would find acceptable as redundancy payments rather than what the public and the Conservative party would accept in terms of job losses in the pits. A formidable set of politicians still mistrust him.

Make 'em laugh, make 'em vote
Article Abstract:
It seems to be generally accepted in the UK that key political leaders should avoid being entertaining in public, as this may be misinterpreted as a sign of not being serious enough. However, this situation may change as the government moves towards a system of elected city mayors. It has been seen in the US and other countries that ordinary people like directly elected politicians to show their own personality. They want to engage directly with politicians, rather than being exposed simply to characterless, scripted speeches.
