Old order bows out as doors close on clubland's northern mecca
Article Abstract:
The Hacienda nightclub in Manchester, England, has gone into liquidation and has debts of over 500,000 pounds sterling. The police are seeking to revoke the club's license. The site is to be sold and will probably be acquired by a real estate developer. The club is owned by Factory, and was set up in 1982 to compete with New York clubs. Factory pioneered new music at the club, but Factory records tended to sign bands with little hope of becoming successful, rather than bands which were available and later became successful. The owners of Factory appeared to be afraid of being seen as wanting to make a profit and Factory records went bankrupt in 1992.

Two pints of lager and a silly hat, please
Article Abstract:
It is possible to regard the trend towards theme pubs in the UK negatively. These pubs are being deliberately set up by brewers to attract young potential drinkers. Combining young and alcohol inevitably brings stupidity and drunkeness, and this is welcomed by the brewers as a way of making more money. Theme pubs are fake and contrived, and cannot ever have the real patina of age, even when they are trying to recreate the past. Furthermore, companies operating these pubs exert an excessive amount of power over their employees.
