On a path of his own
Article Abstract:
Composer Hans Werner Henze, who is currently celebrating his 70th birthday, has written almost 200 works over the last 50 years, as well as being involved in conducting. His works reflect a wide range of genre and style, function and subject matter. He found it hard to establish roots after experiencing Nazi Germany, and so has dabbled in styles including jazz, serialism and neo-classicism. It is only within the last decade that he has come to enjoy wide acceptance by the general public.

Handel: the Tebbit test
Article Abstract:
George Frideric Handel was born and educated in Germany, but spent more than 40 years composing music to entertain people in the UK, being granted British citizenship in 1727. Some observers have raised questions about just how English he really was. This is a very difficult issue, as he embodied a completely new artistic phenomenon and little is known of his private life. In character, he certainly seems to have been more English than German.

Minor masterpieces
Article Abstract:
Howard Skempton has composed a large number of very short pieces of piano music. He regards many of his pieces as occasional, and states that this is the sort of music with which he feels most comfortable. He has been very influenced by Experimental Music, which uses performing conditions from which the musical results cannot be predicted. His pieces are now becoming widely admired, especially for their sense of space and release.
