On its 10th anniversary! The celebrities and glamour that made Hello! a publishing phenomenon
Article Abstract:
Hello! magazine, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, has been much more successful than many observers had initially anticipated. Celebrities seem to be very keen to be featured in this magazine, and its circulation is now around 530,000. Before Hello!, magazines used to feature only the very top celebrities, but this magazine has given celebrity status to a much larger group of people. Circulation is particularly high when the magazine features celebrity weddings, and articles about royalty are also very popular.

A life less ordinary? Well, excuse us for fantasising ...
Article Abstract:
It is not necessarily a bad thing that women's magazines in the UK seem to promote a materialistic, indulgent and irresponsible lifestyle, ignoring issues such as morality and money management. Women's magazines appeal to so many women precisely because they do avoid real issues. The women who read these magazines know that the lifestyle they depict is not real, but enjoy being able to escape from reality for a while. The majority of women would never want to actually live the lifestyle portrayed in these magazines.

According to the mags, every girl's future is a sorry sequence of unsuitable sex and dermabrasion ...
Article Abstract:
The publishers of women's magazines in the UK still seem to believe that the main concerns of the majority of their readers are shopping and sex. Most magazines now make a token effort to address wider issues, but this approach is not at all convincing. They tend to build articles about fashion and make-up around promotional material, and the main concern of editors is to attract advertisers. Overall, it seems to be impossible to make an intelligent response to the average glossy women's magazine.
