The Minister for Curing Illness by Inclusion
Article Abstract:
UK Minister for Public Health Tessa Jowell is showing a strong commitment to gaining first-hand experience of the health inequalities which the government is determined to tackle. She acknowledges that there will be no short-term solutions, and also accepts that ordinary people with health problems will have to be encouraged to use existing local facilities, rather than being offered specialist facilities. She is putting her experience as a psychiatric social worker to good use as she gathers information about what the government needs to do.

Could these priceless pigs help save thousands of human lives each year?
Article Abstract:
Mixed views continue to be expressed in the UK about the ethics of using animal organs in humans and about the dangers of transferring animal viruses into the human population. The government banned experimental pig-to-human transplants until research had been undertaken to indicate that they were safe. A new study now offers strong evidence that the risk of viral transmission is minimal. This news has been welcomed by Imutran, which has bred genetically modified pigs, but some observers remain cautious.

The poor of Britain are going hungry, health chief warns
Article Abstract:
Many of the UK's poorest people now find it extremely difficult to obtain inexpensive, varied food, according to former government chief medical officer Sir Donald Acheson. The number of local food shops in inner city areas is declining as out-of-town supermarkets are created, and this is in turn creating areas where poor nutrition is common. A report by Acheson to be published in Nov 1998 will recommend that priority be given to improving the nutrition of mothers.
