Article Abstract:
The UK UCCA and PCAS (university and polytechnic placement) clearing system opens on Aug 26 1992. Unofficial clearing begins a week before when A' level results are published. Nearly 11,500 people found univeristy places through official clearing and 19,000 polytechnic places in 1991. The system allows universities to hold onto original applicants even if they have not gained good results. Such candidates will have researched the campus and facilities and are less likely to drop out. Course vacancies are updated several times on the electronic databases.

How do you know he 'could do better?' (introduction of IQ tests to differentiate performances by child and school)
Article Abstract:
Professor Hans Eysenck says that all children should undergo IQ (Intelligence Quotient) tests annually as well as national curriculum tests, examination result tables being meaningless without knowing the ability levels of the children. Educational psychologists use IQ tests on children with learning difficulties but the schools themselves do not. London Borough of Croydon schools have decided to continue with ability tests at nine and 14 as an addition to the national curriculum and its own tests on English and mathematics at seven and 11.

It's great. Much harder than at school
Article Abstract:
Mensa, the National Association for Gifted Children, and schools recommend gifted children for weekend places at the Gift company's Broomfield establishment in Essex, England. Former Essex County Council teachers established Gift when the authority stopped funding the teaching of gifted children. Courses are available for many subjects rarely offered at school, for children in age groups between nine and 18. The higher level of discussion makes the children think and meeting others like themselves is stimulating.
