Once it was great to be British
Article Abstract:
After the Act of Union in 1707 Scottish towns like Glasgow and Paisley began to profit from the free trade the Union brought and Scottish businessmen found out how to exploit the much extended market south of the border. The superior Scottish education system also equipped Scots to move into England and obtain lucrative jobs such as doctors, engineers and architects. They also prospered in the diplomatic service. Now that these attractions have faded, so has the Scottish enthusiasm for union. The expanded European market could now lead to a repeat of the history of the eighteenth century.

The war, the duke and the women
Article Abstract:
Even before the French Revolution on 1789 British women were supposed to avoid behaving in the same way as Frenchwomen, who were considered frivolous and irrational. The fate of Marie Antoinette inspired patriotism in all types of British women during the wars against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. Women had romantic dreams about military men. The Duke of Wellington was so hero-worshipped that a public subscription by women only raised 10,000 pounds sterling for a nude bronze statue of Achilles in Hyde Park in his honour.

The illusion of a two-party state
Article Abstract:
British government appears to be a two-party system, but long terms of single party power are usual. This usually results in division within the party. The party in office often adjusts electoral boundaries to win more seats. A long period of rule usually ends through a serious party disagreement or a major event such as war. The Conservative Party has dominated in the 20th century.
