Article Abstract:

A journey on the canals of north-west England takes the traveller through some traditional industrial towns, such as Blackburn and Wigan. Many parts of the canal seem run-down, having often been used to dump household waste. However, in some areas efforts are being made to reclaim it. Past these towns, the landscape becomes more rural, with the vividly coloured hills and woodlands looking extremely attractive. There is a wide range of friendly pubs and bed and breakfast accommodation along the whole of the route.

Open to doubts about staff safety

Article Abstract:

Open University tutor-counsellors are poorly paid for the responsibility they are expected to hold and receive little relevant training. The open access policy for students means staff are unaware of mentally ill students. Tutorials, held at weekends and evenings, in otherwise deserted buildings, leave tutors open to security problems. As more mental patients are released into the community, more may apply unremarked to the Open University.

Charity doubts cast cloud over school fee plans

Article Abstract:

Educational trusts may soon lose their charitable status as a result of an investigation by the Charity Commission, and this may force many parents to look for new ways of saving for a private education for their children. At present, these trusts offer higher-rate taxpayers a 15% tax break, but the Charity Commission is concerned about their commercial use as a way of paying school fees on an individual basis.
