One of the walking wounded
Article Abstract:
Thames Television's Dir of Programmes David Elstein has accused the government of commercialising television and axing jobs. Thames Television lost its franchise as weekday ITV (Independent Television) contractor to Carlton TV. From Jan 1 1993 Thames will become an independent production and distribution company. It has cut its workforce from 1,500 to 160. Elstein has negotiated a 1-year, 29 million pounds sterling production deal with ITV to produce Thames classics. Elstein plans to launch a satellite station with the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and has bid for the new channel, Channel 5.

Did you see the TV revolution?
Article Abstract:
Channel 4 television was set up in Nov 1982 to encourage innovation and attract viewers who did not like ITV. It will be separated from ITV companies in Jan 1993, so it will have to sell its airtime as their rival. When it began, it employed idealistic commissioning editors who worked in chaos. It operated as a publisher supplied by independent production companies. These have multiplied to 750 in 1992 and supply ITV and the BBC as well. New experiments have to be interspersed with less demanding programmes.
