The bite of the knight
Article Abstract:
Robert Stephens was offered the part of Falstaff with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1985 but turned it down because the pay was so bad. Having turned down Trevor Nunn's offer then he was apprehensive when Adrian Noble asked him again. The money was still poor and he was of a mind to refuse again. However the production this time involved Henry IV Parts One and Two and the fact that both would almost certainly not be done together again before he died persuaded him to accept. He feels that an actor can always find qualities in Falstaff to enable him to enrich and stretch the role.
