Principles and prejudice
Article Abstract:
The issue of what constitutes a classic work of literature is receiving considerable attention at the 1998 Cheltenham Festival. In modern terms, a classic work is usually seen as one which can be reinterpreted by each new generation. For critic Frank Kermode, classic status can only be granted to a small group of texts which can work in any place and at any period. It is also possible to argue that literature that changes history in a significant way should be regarded as classic.

Language, liberty and the English of our dictionaries
Article Abstract:
The English language is extremely rich, being the country's sociology as well as its history. New words are constantly being added, and usage of the English language is also becoming freer. However, there are situations in which the lack of ambiguity of other languages makes them preferable to English. It is likely that English will remain the only world language for some time to come, and for this reason an inner core of unambiguous English will probably evolve.
