Article Abstract:
The opera 'Palestrina,' written by Hans Pfitzner and first performed in Munich, Germany, in 1917, has always been popular in Germany, but has not been performed much elsewhere. This is partly because Pfitzner believed very strongly in the supremacy of German culture and was friendly with some leading Fascists. However, the opera does have some very good points, especially the way in which the music is reduced to old church modes. It is rather uneven in quality, and possibly too long, but has many passages of great beauty.

Minimalist with the mostest
Article Abstract:
Composer La Monte Young was a driving force behind minimalism. He has had a significant influence on the music of the second half of the 20th century, and has connections with a range of musical styles, including punk, techno and ambient. He has a very controlling character, and his work reflects a fascination with precision. A number of well-known musicians are to perform in a benefit concert to raise money for the continuation of his work at the Barbican Centre in London, England, on Oct 31, 1997.

Cherishing every note
Article Abstract:
French composer Henri Dutilleux, who is celebrating his 80th birthday in 1996, often uses rich chords, but these are by no means the only element in his music. He writes excellent melodies, and his music has an air of elusiveness and mystery. His melodies are freely floating, but always have strong harmonic implications and complement the chords which which they are juxtaposed. His work took some time to reach maturity, but he has been able to compose for leading soloists.
