Partying with Pride - a sign of the times
Article Abstract:
The Gay Pride festival, which has now been running for 25 years, has always been a key event for gays and lesbians, but only in recent years has it started to attract large crowds. The 1995 festival will have around 200,000 visitors, and will have a considerable number of mainstream supporters, including some international companies. Gay and lesbian culture is now becoming much more widely accepted, and there is growing media interest in gay and lesbian issues.

Glad to be just like everybody else
Article Abstract:
Hollywood films have traditionally portrayed gay men and lesbians in very negative, stereotyped ways. However, there now appears to be a growing awareness among film producers that the lives of gay men and lesbians are as diverse as those of any other group of people. Most recently, the film 'The Birdcage,' which portrays two gay men who are in a loving and committed relationship, emphasises reconciliation and family values.

Glad to be gay journalists
Article Abstract:
The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), created in 1990 by Roy Aarons, a former editor of the Oakland Tribune, now has almost 1,200 members in 19 chapters across the US and Canada. It campaigns against homophobia in the media, and has taken up many cases of inaccurate or misleading reporting of gay issues. The National Union of Journalists in the UK is considering setting up a similar organisation.
