Payne's pleasure
Article Abstract:
Anthony Payne, composer, broadcaster, music critic and teacher, is celebrating his 60th birthday on August 2 1996. The composer was educated at Dulwich College, London, and Durham University, reading music, where in his last term, in the 1960s, he had a nervous breakdown which stopped his creativity for four years. Although he is highly accomplished, Payne's work is not often heard on disc or in concerts. He has been much involved in helping the promotion of other composers. In August 1996 a CD of his work, entitled 'Time's Arrow', will precede the launch of other recordings.

When time stands still
Article Abstract:
Olivier Messiaen was a powerful, contemporary musician who taught at the Conservatoire. He checked proofs methodically but his musical structure reaffirmed ritualistic aspects of Western music. His sensitive ear envisioned musical sounds in colour, creating vivid music. Tributes from pupils and colleagues are given.
