Peace in Ulster may be on course but the campagne is still on ice
Article Abstract:
The peace process in Northern Ireland remains on course, although it may never be possible to identify a clear point at which peace is actually established. The new Northern Irish assembly will face many challenges, and a great deal will depend on the political skills of Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble. Care must be taken not to rule out Ian Paisley, who represents one-third of Northern Irish Protestants. Many Unionists share his view that the best approach is resistance, rather than mutual accommodation.

Pioneers who sidestepped bullets and bombs on the perilous path to peace
Article Abstract:
SDLP leader John Hume and Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble have been jointly awarded the 1998 Nobel peace prize. For Hume, the prize marks the high point of a political career which began in the 1960s and has made him a key figure in Northern Irish life. In contrast, Trimble has only been an MP for a relatively short time and has only led the Ulster Unionists since 1995. Hume and the nationalists are very clear about what they want to achieve, while Unionism is still very divided on the best way forward.
