Revealed: Ulster deal that failed
Article Abstract:
The UK Northern Ireland Office attempted to put together an agreement which would have allowed the Orange Order march through Drumcree, Northern Ireland, to go ahead without violence. The UK government accepted that it would not be possible to reach a local deal with the Orange Order, and therefore pursued a policy of finding the least unacceptable option. In the event, the Orange Order was not prepared to make any compromises, and the march was accompanied by considerable violence.

Ulster: The breakdown of civil order
Article Abstract:
Large numbers of loyalist protesters are currently assembling at a number of locations across Northern Ireland, and the security forces are now warning that they are unable to guarantee free passage. More British troops are being despatched there, as the RUC is reaching full capacity. Some observers fear that a breakdown of law and order may soon take place. There are likely to be particular problems on Jul 12 1996, the traditional climax of the loyalist marching season.

The ceasefire in Northern Ireland has now lasted for a whole year, contrary to the expectations of many. The anniversary has been marked with a day of quiet reflection.
