Peking presses for Olympics prize
Article Abstract:
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) visited Peking, China, to inspect the facilities for hosting the Olympic Games in the year 2000. Banners and advertisements promote the idea to the Chinese. Drummers are being trained for the opening ceremony and lectures on the history of the Olympics and the Olympic spirit are held. Many amenities are already available as they were built for the 1990 Asian Games. The bid promises demolition of chimneys, reducing pollution, and new roads and projects which would be good for the country.

Peking fights for the souls of capitalists
Article Abstract:
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP,) which has a policy of economic reform, recruits new members. There are about 2.5 million party members in the province, 500,000 more than in the 1980s. Only one in six is accepted as quality is more important than quantity. There are about 52 million members in the whole country. Nearly half the new members are farmers and workers and 2/3 are under 35. Few graduates or private businessmen are members. The CCP is suspicious of exploitation of workers in private business.

Peking backs off US trade war
Article Abstract:
China has reached an agreement with the US which will oblige it to take a tougher line on intellectual piracy and to ensure that US films and music have greater access to the Chinese market. A six-month 'special enforcement period' will now begin, during which investigations will be made into factories in China which are thought to be producing pirated CDs, CD-roms and laser discs. China has already acted to avert trade sanctions against its imports by closing seven CD factories.
