The nature of the pet injuries included broken bones and abrasions as well as gun shot wounds when the homeless animals strayed and formed packs creating a nuisance around the neigborhood.

On treating a sick tank
Article Abstract:
A bacterial strain carried by African cichlids colonized the aquarium used for these fish and resulted in the infection of the subsequent tank occupants. Water quality had to be improved via water changes, diatoming, and rinsing of filter materials. Antibiotics and an antiparasitic agent effective against internal parasites were then administered. The procedure resulted in the recovery of about half of the affected fish.
