Pipped by France over hot line to Moscow
Article Abstract:
The proposal by UK prime minister Harold Wilson in Feb 1966 that a 'hot line' directly linking heads of state in the UK and Russia should be set up was met with some resistance. The UK Foreign Office was opposed to the idea, mainly because it would lose some of its control over communications with Russia, and many observers felt that there was no guarantee that a link of this kind would work effectively, especially if it was only to be used in an emergency. One of the main aims of the scheme was to gain political advantage over France.

US, Britain jump into a new age of warfare
Article Abstract:
US and British troops have been participating in exercise 'Purple Star,' the largest combined deployment since the Gulf War. The approaches taken during this exercise emphasise the future directions which military planners believe modern warfare will take. There was a strong focus on paratroops, which are seen as playing a key role in the new strategic environment. The main aim of the exercise was to prove the concept of a combined joint task force (CJTF) working for the United Nations.
