Please applaud the first act of a dazzling Tory pantomime
Article Abstract:
The most recent crisis in the UK Conservative party, which has involved party leader William Hague dismissing Lord Cranborne, a hereditary peer, is connected with the party's stance on UK links with the European Union. Former party leader John Major had been criticized for being too flexible and indecisive, and Hague has responded by seeking to portray himself as a strong leader. It is likely that the image of the Conservative party will be damaged further if Hague continues to try to be a strong leader, as this approach is only effective if a leader is genuinely strong and the party is subservient.

Turn again, Mr Hague
Article Abstract:
William Hague was elected leader of the UK Conservative party because he was willing to stand firm against UK participation in the single European currency. This stance benefited him at that time, but has now become a trap, as he runs the risk of a right-wing rebellion if he attempts to become more pro-European. He has gained the short-term support of an older generation, but must now realize that many ordinary people feel that the UK should attempt to become a successful part of Europe.
