Think before you test
Article Abstract:
Those who undergo genetic testing and discover that they have a predisposition to a particular disease may find that they will have to pay higher insurance premiums. In some cases, it may prove difficult for them to obtain insurance cover at all, as insurers are unwilling to take on the risk of people who may require a large payment if they become ill. There are already seven conditions where insurers can use the results of genetic testing in establishing premiums, including myotonic dystrophy, familial adenomatous polyposis and hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy.

A change in policy on HIV risk
Article Abstract:
Many insurance companies in the UK refuse to offer life cover to people who have been tested positive for HIV. Those companies that do offer life cover for HIV positive people charge extremely high premiums. Pinnacle Insurance is going against this trend with plans for the UK's first policy for HIV positive people. This is set to be launched in Jul 1998. Some observers have expressed scepticism, indicating that this policy may be little more than a funeral expenses plan.

The price of protection against terrorist damage
Article Abstract:
Insurance for terrorist damage in the UK is now handled by Pool Re, a reinsurer created by UK insurers. Terrorist damage is no longer included in mainstream commercial property insurance, and only 100,000 pounds sterling per property is now covered. It will be necessary to pay a very large additional premium to obtain full insurance cover for a large commercial property. Tenants should approach their landlord to ascertain whether there is terrorist cover on the building.
