Plug in for spring
Article Abstract:
Some flowers are difficult to raise from seed, and this has encouraged many gardeners to consider purchasing them as young, ready-grown plants instead. This is a much more expensive option than buying seed, but gives more reliable results. It is worth considering this approach for petunia and lobelias, both of which are much easier to raise from plugs than from seed. It is best to plant out plugs and seedlings in individual pots, thus reducing root disturbance when they are planted out.

Designs worth caring for - the legacy of Harold Peto
Article Abstract:
West Dean Park, close to Chichester, UK, and Inacullin island, County Cork, Ireland, both have Edwardian gardens designed by Harold Peto. The West Dean gardens, which have benefited from a huge investment under the care of Jim Buckland, gardens manager, and his wife, Sarah Wain, are very impressive, though do not appear to be have any connection with the house, whilst the Ilnacullin gardens are most disappointing, appearing tired, despite the the presence of a number of gardeners.

Where I learnt to love the triffids
Article Abstract:
The garden at Great Dixter, Northiam, England, is extremely unusual. It contains many interesting plants, and looks attractive even into autumn. The basic structure of the garden was set out in the early years of the 20th century by Nathaniel Lloyd, father of Christopher Lloyd, the present owner. The house is approached by a straight stone path with meadow grass on both sides. Many of the plants are not those traditionally associated with domestic gardens.
