Major offers to be EU's 'flexible' friend
Article Abstract:
A compromise may now be reached on European reform following the announcement by UK prime minister John Major that he is prepared to see other European countries establish a common immigration and justice policy as long as the UK receives a 'flexible' opt-out. The UK has until now blocked any attempts to make progress on making the Schengen agreement, under which a number of European Union countries already cooperate on immigration and justice, part of European Union law. It seems that the UK will now agree not to use its right of veto as long as its interests are fully protected.

Euro plan will cut Britain out
Article Abstract:
France and Germany have reached agreement on a 'stability council' to determine economic policy in the area covered by the future single European currency, according to recent reports. However, these two countries are believed to have agreed that no formal announcement will be made on this issue until near the launch of monetary union. Some observers fear that exclusion from monetary union will mean that the UK will not be able to influence important decisions relating to its future.
