Poland struggles to shape up for Europe
Article Abstract:
Poland has attracted large amounts of foreign investment over recent years, and the country's government believes that it will now be in a suitable state for European Union membership by 2000. Its deficit is now lower than the 3% ceiling set for European Monetary Union membership, and inflation has fallen to 17%, from 38% in 1993. However, European Union officials are less certain about Polish membership. They point out that the new communist government may be having the effect of slowing down privatisation, and highlight bank statistics which indicate that inflation is in fact more than 20%.

The European Union plans to expand to 21 members by early in the 21st century, with negotiations with the first applicants being completed by 2002 or 2003.

Poles seek their place at heart of Europe
Article Abstract:
Polish membership of the European Union will have a significant impact on the future direction of Europe, according to Polish president Alexander Kwasniewski. Poles see European Union membership as a way of securing stability, especially in ensuring that it remains free of Russian influence. Some believe that it is Poland's right to be at the centre of Europe, and feel that the country should resume a key role in European affairs.
