Popularity is fine, but it's not what makes art great
Article Abstract:
It has become common in the UK to dismiss those who strive to identify the highest standards in art and design as merely elitist, ignoring the views of the vast majority of ordinary people. However, it is possible to argue that the purposes of civilization are best served by the pursuit of excellence. Art has become democratized in the 20th century through mass production and mass media, but this does not mean that there is no longer any need for judgment and criticism.
