A great time for consumers but it's tough on managers
Article Abstract:
International firms are being negatively affected by rising costs, falling prices and declining production. This has led to a wave of restructuring as financial markets place pressure on companies that fail to meet expectations. Mergers lead to many employees being made redundant, and are an indication of weakness, rather than strength. Consumers could benefit as goods become cheaper, but this will not assist the worldwide squeeze on profits.

Firms need to wise up to their intellectual assets
Article Abstract:
Financial markets tend to look very favourably on companies which are rich in ideas, even if the financial performance of those companies is not particularly strong. For some companies, their value lies in the intellectual property they have developed, rather than in their physical assets. However, companies are in general very slow to acknowledge and to manage their intellectual assets, and invest very little in human capital.
