Poverty's the problem, work is the solution
Article Abstract:
Unemployment has been a key factor in breaking down social cohesion in the UK. It is now increasingly widely acknowledged that employment plays a key role in boosting individual and collective self-esteem. The new UK government seems to be taking this into account with its decision to deny all unemployed people except single mothers the option of receiving welfare benefits, rather than doing any available job. It will use the windfall tax on utilities to begin the work of reducing unemployment among the young and long-term unemployed, and hopes that this scheme will eventually produce savings of its own.

Labour taskforce to help underclass
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Labor party plans to help the socially disadvantaged by setting up a taskforce called the 'Social Exclusion Unit'. The unit will involve inputs from a number of government departments including employment and health, and could help reduce crime, cut welfare bills and ease social divisions. The groups targeted will include households with people of working age and no earners, the young homeless, and people staying in the lowest fifth of income groups for four consecutive years.

'Scumbag' Straw's unglamorous job may just bring in the voters
Article Abstract:
UK Home Secretary Jack Straw has been placing strong emphasis on the need to ensure that ordinary people are free from fear. In this way, he has pushed forward the process of reclaiming law and order as legitimate Labour concerns. Indeed, his Crime and Disorder Bill could ultimately prove to be one of the most significant criminal justice measures since the 1970s. It is now becoming vital for the government to deliver on its existing policies, and Straw is excellently suited for this role.
