Millions of shares, but not many laughs

Chairman of Slater Walker merchant bank Jim Slater was influential in 1972 but in 1974 the company collapsed. He was a qualified accountant who became deputy sales director of British Leyland. Illness made him seek an outside way of making money. He bought some shares and made 40,000 pounds sterling. He wrote a share-tipping column for the Daily Telegraph and joined forces with Peter Walker. He has also written children's books. He has donated to the charity Birthright and sponsored British chess.

For Nancy, happiness is a two-Mum family
Article Abstract:
A lesbian couple, Angela and Elizabeth, who have lived together in London, England for 20 years, decided that Angela would have a baby by artificial insemination. They have lived as a normal family since 1984 and met no hostility socially. Unmarried mothers used to be treated as outcasts but in 1993 even lesbians having children is acceptable. The daughter, Nancy, has been told how she was conceived since she was two, and has not yet been teased at school.
