Where the pill is still bitter
Article Abstract:
Dictator of Romania Nicolae Ceausescu forbad contraception and abortion until the revolution of 1989. Although the law was changed immediately, people found it difficult to change. Women used to abort themselves and then go to hospital for help. In the 1980s many Romanian women died when pregnant. Contraceptives were only available through smuggling. In 1992 abortion is available in the first three months of pregnancy for 500 lei, reducing the number dying by three-quarters. The International Planned Parenthood federation established a family planning agency, the Society for Education on Contraception and Sexuality, but women see the advice as more interference.
