Prison drama ends in political farce

Derek Lewis, former director-general of the Prison Service, has issued a writ for unlawful dismissal against home secretary Michael Howard. This is the culmination of a series of events within prison management in the UK which have been causing growing concern. These include the escape of three prisoners from Parkhurst top security prison, which prompted the dismissal of prison governor John Marriott, and outspoken criticism by Lord Taylor, the Lord Chief Justice, of the government's penal policy. The home secretary has emphasised his determination not to resign over the latest issue.

The accusations that threaten Howard
Article Abstract:
A writ has been issued by Derek Lewis claiming unfair dismissal from his post as director-general of the Prison Service by home secretary Michael Howard. This move could seriously endanger Howard's career, as it will allow Lewis to use large volumes of Home Office documents which back up his allegations of political interference in the management of the Prison Service. Howard is now facing calls for his resignation over the present crisis in the Prison Service,
