Mr Murdoch's global paper-chase
Article Abstract:
News International, part of the worldwide media empire headed by Rupert Murdoch, is an extremely profitable company, but has still managed to pay almost no UK tax on its core activities for 10 years. Accountants have undertaken complicated intra-group financial transactions, the purpose of which remains unknown. Moving capital and loan stock around generates profit and losses, and therefore allows the company to claim 'group tax relief' at a level which ensures that it avoids paying any corporation tax in the UK.

Fresh tax revelations at News
Article Abstract:
Three of News International's 'finance' concerns undertook transactions which left them with profits of 340 million pounds sterling in the year to Jun 1994, but they paid almost no tax, according to media investigations. This seems to be additional evidence that News International, owned by Rupert Murdoch, has been involved in tax avoidance. The company has earned almost 1 billion pounds sterling in profits over the last 10 years, but has paid only 11.74 million pounds sterling in tax.
