Praying for a miracle in Zaire
Article Abstract:
Many ordinary people in Zaire blame their great hardship on the country's president, General Mobutu Sese Seko. They emphasise that he made many promises when he returned to the country for a time after having medical treatment abroad, but that nothing has changed. They feel that prime minister Kengo wa Dondo is simply a puppet of the president, and are instead increasingly supporting rebel leader Laurent Kabila. A new campaign of defiance is emerging in Kinshasa, with people refusing to use the new bank notes issued recently because they fear they further weaken the economy.

West gives Mobutu green light to unleash dogs of war in Zaire
Article Abstract:
There are no indications of international willingness to support efforts by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to assist more than 200,000 Rwandan Hutu refugees who are trapped deep in the jungle in Zaire. This contrasts strongly with the situation in Nov 1996, when there were strong international calls for action to protect more than 1 million Rwandan Hutu refugees trapped in eastern Zaire. Now, there is discreet international support for moves by the government of Zaire to undertake a counter-offensive against Rwandan-backed rebels in eastern Zaire.

Mandela offers hope of end to Zaire chaos
Article Abstract:
There is renewed hope for an end to the civil war in Zaire following the intervention of South African president Nelson Mandela. He has become the first head of state to make a public appearance with rebel leader Laurent-Desire Kabila, whose troops now hold one-eighth of Zaire. Mandela has also met Honore Ngbanda, chief security adviser to Zairean president Mobutu Sese Seko. Conditions for direct negotiations between the two sides are now being discussed.
