Privatise the Royal Opera House, or nationalise it
Article Abstract:
The decision to close the Royal Opera House in its present form in Jan 1999 and reopen at the end of 1999 if conditions are favourable raises wider issues about public funding of the arts. It is now clear that the management of the Royal Opera House has failed, as has the relationship between the Royal Opera House, the Arts Council, the government and taxpayers. It is ironic that the Royal Opera House should be suffering management problems at a time when it is being extremely successful as an artistic enterprise.
