Prodi's dilemma: let the left win or surrender Italy's drive towards Emu

Article Abstract:

Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi is likely to face increasing opposition from Rifondazione Comunista, the far-left party which forms a key element of his centre-left Olive Tree coalition government, as he seeks to ensure that Italy meets the conditions for being one of the first countries admitted to the single European currency. He has so far been able to use creative accounting and tax increases to bring Italy closer to meeting the conditions for the single currency. However, he will soon have to start making changes to the welfare state, which will be opposed by Rifondazione.

Fear and loathing in the Alto Adige

Article Abstract:

The quiet Italian town of Merano, where there is no unemployment and crime and drugs are not a real problem, witnessed six brutal murders over a period of three weeks from Feb 08, 1996. The killer, Ferdinand Gamber, was eventually cornered by police and committed suicide. Local people are now finding it very hard to come to terms with what has happened. The town is in one of the most ethnically divided regions in western Europe, and it is likely that local history was a key motivation in the murders.
