Professor A.J. Aitken

Lexicographer Adam Aitken graduated from Edinburgh University, Scotland, with a first class honours in English Language and Literature in 1947. He developed a career as both a lecturer and a lexicographer. He gained many awards for his talents as a scholar, and came to be regarded as the leading authority on the Scots language. He always devoted a great deal of time to helping younger scholars, and served on many committees and public bodies connected with the Scots language or lexicography.

Article Abstract:
Librarian and editor William Aitken studied English at Edinburgh University, Scotland. He gained employment in the Scottish Central Library for Students, and from 1946 was County Librarian of Clackmannanshire. He was County Librarian of Perth and Kinross from 1949 and of Ayrshire from 1958 to 1962. He joined the Religious Society of Friends in 1962, and undertook various jobs for Friends in Scotland. He joined the staff of the School of Librarianship in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1962.

Professor J.D. Pearson
Article Abstract:
James Douglas Pearson was a bibliographer and librarian who started work at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London University, England, in 1950. He helped expand the library and taught a course in the School of Librarianship on Oriental and African bibliography. He left SOAS in 1972 and was later awarded Chairin Bibliography by London University, retiring in 1979 when he went to Cambridge University, where he had previously worked.
