Professor Jim Millen

Chemist and educationist Jim Millen graduated with a first class degree in Chemistry from University College London. He was appointed Demonstrator in Chemistry in 1944, and subsequently became Lecturer, Reader and Professor at University College London. His doctoral research led to the identification by Raman spectroscopy of the linear nitronium in mixtures of nitric and sulphuric acids. He became influential in education, and during 1979 to 1981 was President of the Education Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Professor Kble Sykes
Article Abstract:
Chemist Keble Sykes initially attracted attention while working in Sir Cyril Hinshelwood's Physical Chemistry Laboratory in Oxford, England. Here, he undertook research into the mechanism of the gasification of carbon. He later moved to the University College of Swansea, where he extended his research into the catalytic influences of alkali metal salts and transition metal oxides on the gasification of carbons. He was appointed to the chair of physical chemistry at Queen Mary College in London, England, in 1956.
