Professor Phyllis Auty
Article Abstract:
Historian Phyllis Auty gained a BA in History from St Hilda's College, Oxford, England, in 1931. She was an aspiring medievalist, but switched to modern history after taking her BLitt in 1934. She travelled extensively in central and south-eastern Europe before the second world war, and this made her a valuable source of information during the war. She worked first for the BBC, then for the Foreign Office's Political Intelligence Dept and finally for the War Office. She lectured at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at Oxford University, England, between 1947 and 1969.

Professor Margaret Gowing
Article Abstract:
Historian of science Margaret Gowing gained a First in Economic History at the London School of Economics in 1941. She held appointments at the Ministry of Supply and the Board of Trade before moving to the Cabinet Office in 1945. She spent the next 14 years in the historical section of the Cabinet Office. During this time, she published two books. She joined the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority as historian and archivist in 1959, and in 1966 became Reader in Contemporary History at the University of Kent, England.

Caroline Bingham
Article Abstract:
Historian and biographer Caroline Bingham took an honours degree in History at Bristol University, England. Her first published work, 'The Making of a King: The Early Years of James VI and I,' appeared in 1968, and she went on to gain a strong reputation as a historian and biographer with an interest in Scottish history. Her works covered all periods of Scottish history, but she also dealt with English history in 'The Life and Times of Edward II' and 'The Crowned Lions.'
