Promises, promises - but have they been kept?
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party has made mixed progress with implementing its manifesto commitments since it came to power in May 1997. It has generally adhered to its commitments relating to economic policy, including strict control of public spending. It has also made significant progress with implementing commitments on law and order. However, it has not been at all successful with regard to the National Health Service. It had promised to reduce hospital waiting lists, but in fact lists have risen by more than 100,000 since May 1997.

No end to the great rail fiasco
Article Abstract:
There are still serious problems with the UK rail system. Rail operators seem to be willing to make long-term investments in rolling stock, but there are few signs that they are considering operating more services or lengthening trains to deal with short-term rises in demand. There are also substantial deficiencies on the London Underground system. A House of Commons select committee has published severe criticisms of the Dept of the Environment, Transport and the Regions.
